Honolulu Lions Hold 28th Cavalcade of Stars by Lion Jack Schweigert, Esq. The annual Cavalcade of Stars is the Lions Club of Honolulu's signature community-service project. Each year in September for the past three decades the Club rents a large venue; engages a list of notable local entertainers; busses in the blind, the elderly, at-risk kids, and others; and gives them a really great show. Cavalcade 28 was held September 10 at McKinley High School in Downtown Honolulu and was a model of good family entertainment. Legendary Hawaiian singer-composer Jon Osorio sang his best-known songs; magician Michael Ching did some of his best magic tricks; Pierre Grill, along with his 11-year-old prodigy singer and 78- year-old banjo player wowed us with his one-man band stagemanship; Wanda Koyada brought Cherish the Dog, who was as endearing as his name and so talented as to be even able to say prayers before bed and tuck himself in; the Hypersquad, a contemporary modern dance group composed of kids, kept us in awe of how children can be so talented; and the frosting on the cake was the stellar performance by Hawaii's own comedian, Frank Delima, who once again acted as our emcee. As to statistics, this year we bussed in over 300 people from senior citizen clubs and disabled healthcare centers and altogether entertained over 1,000 people. Based on this year's success we are looking forward to next year's Cavalcade 29. |
