Blind Person of the Year Award Luncheon Since 1957 the Lions Club of Honolulu has held a Blind Person of the Year Award Luncheon. The club honored Ms. Brook Sexton as its 53rd recipient of this award on April 13, 2010. Brook was selected by a committee from the Ho’opono Rehabilitation Center for her distinguished accomplishment of being employed in spite of her loss of vision. Brook’s nomination described her as an “intelligent, fiercely independent, and highly skilled woman.” Blind from birth, she moved to Hawaii in 2005 and has been the Mobility Instructor for three years. Brook is “especially interested in mentoring blind youth and helping them move from dependency to independency. This coming summer, she will volunteer to help take Hawaii blind youth on a kayaking trip in Alaska. She is also very involved locally in her church, visiting families, assisting with childcare for her fellow church members and other outreach activities.” Deborah Gabe, who nominated Brook also said, “She helped me learn braille, she taught me about myself and life, about my own stereotyped perceptions of blind people, and how I did not need to be ashamed of my own blindness. She inspired me to, once again, welcome my future and to stop feeling sorry for myself.” Brook is certainly deserving of the award she received. Everyone was happy to see Lion TC Chun who was able to attend the meeting that day. Thanks to his sister Cheryl and brother-in-law Mel for transporting him. Lion TC chaired this luncheon for many years so it is a special event for him. Members were glad to see him looking so good! The LCH was honored to have 1VDG Chris Tamura and ZC Steve Onoue attend the luncheon. Birthday honorees that day were Lion Jeanne Liu and Bill Malone. Congratulations to Brook for her wonderful accomplishments in life and to our April birthday members. Everyone had a good time! (Story & photos by Donna Tamasese - Honolulu) |
