White Cane Walk
It was bright and comfortable the morning of December 5, as everyone was gathering in the Capitol Rotunda to begin the annual “White Cane Walk for 2014”. Although the walk had been postponed from its original date in October due to Hurricane Ana, everyone that morning was full of energy and ready to roll! The light pink “Walk” t-shirts added just the right touch for our unity.
Lion Gavan Abe (Lions Club of Honolulu) helped to organize everyone and get the walkers moving along. Escorted by many Lions and other friends of Ho’opono, it was a happy sight to see the walkers as they meandered along Punchbowl, S. King, Bishop and Beretania Streets and then to the grounds of ‘Iolani Palace. All along the way, members of the Honolulu Police Department (HPD) were always on the lookout for the safety and welfare of the walkers. They are always a positive addition to the walk.
Upon returning to the ‘Iolani Palace grounds, the walkers were treated to refreshing, cold sodas, chips and ‘ono hot dogs – always a great way to revitalize after this fun walk in downtown Honolulu. It was nice to see the walkers socializing together after the walk, just relaxing and talking story.
A special mahalo to Lion Gavan, Community Services Coordinator at Ho’opono, who just happens to be a member of LCH, for his great efforts in coordinating the walk every year. Other LCH members walking this year were Lion Shannon Cantan, Lion Jerry Liu, who proudly carried his sign as he moved along the streets and Lion Donna Tamasese, who made it back this year to one of her favorite activities, walking and taking pictures! We missed many of the other regulars from LCH and hope to see them back again in 2015.
