The Lions Club of Honolulu was happy to participate in the District 50 "Knights of the Blind" train excursion. It was a pleasant day for a picnic lunch and casual train ride along the Ewa coast. We were joined by fellow District 50 Lions, blind vendors, members of the visually impaired community and friends. There was lots of fellowship and tons of prizes!! Special thanks to the Knights of the Blind committee, Pearl City Lion Sharon Ige, LCH Lions Kyle Laconsay & Gavan Abe, District Governor Nadine Nishioka. Also, thank you to the CIS's and many fellow Lions and friends that helped out at the event
We encourage fellow LCH members to consider other groups that would benefit from this train ride for future community events.

This weekend our club thoroughly cleaned, then painted the bus stop in front of WalMart on Keeaumoku St. Maintaining bus stops and painting over the graffiti is one of the service projects we do to make our community better. While working, we received many compliments from people as they walked by, appreciative of the improvements. One nice lady actually went into the store and bought us bottled water. Mahalo to a friend of the Lions, Karl Alexander for the helping hand!!

This past week we had the privilege to assist the Institute for Human Services (IHS) with their dinner service at the women's and family shelter. It is a wonderful and worthy experience to help their clients. We were happy to see their clients enjoy hot food, even president Jack enjoyed a plate!!
Big mahalos to president Jack Schweigert, PDG Bernard Ho, Lion Dennis Ting, Lion Kyle Laconsay, Lion Jean Ota and CIS Carl, and daughters Jaycie & Jillian Ota. Also, mahalo to Lion Joshua Jensen for providing this opportunity to serve. Please contact Lion Mick Laconsay if you wish to serve next time!

Part of our 90th Charter festivities included lunch at Oahu Country Club and dinner at Willows. There was good food, drinks and fellowship with our visitors from sister clubs Hiroshima and Osaka Minami. It was a great opportunity to spend more personal time with our guests prior to the gala event.

On October 26, 2001 the Lions Club of Honolulu, along with our sister clubs Hiroshima Lions Club, Osaka-Minami Lions Club, Kurashiki-Achi Lions, and Higashi-Osaka Nishi Lions, planted a small tree at Magic Island which is known as the "International Friendship Tree." Over the years, Lions from our clubs continued to meet under the tree to share a meal and nurture the friendship between our clubs. On October 13, 2016, as part of our 90th Charter festivities, Lions from the Honolulu, Hiroshima and Osaka-Minami Clubs gathered around the tree for a picnic to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the International Friendship Tree. It was a beautiful sunny day to reflect on the friendship that has been forged over many years and the many Lions who shared a meal under this tree before us.

Lion Jean Ota and her Damien Leos continue to make an impact in the community with another successful food drive. They collected boxes of Spam, corned beef, and toiletries for families in need. The food and toiletries were loaded up by a group of Leos and fellow Damien students and delivered to the Hawaii Food Bank by president Jack Schweigert and Lion Mick Laconsay. The Lions Club of Honolulu is proud to play a small part in assisting the Damien Leos for the second year in a row with this worthy community project.

Kudos to Jean Ota, the Damien Memorial High School student government and Damien Leos for the terrific work of collecting food items, toothpaste and towels, and dog toys for three worthy non-profit organizations on Oahu. They did the hard work of collecting and packing of donation items and
the Lions Club of Honolulu gladly delivered these items on their behalf.
